It was the first run of our Alaska firm trip when a slab Avalanche broke off and took my friend Phil Meier off his feet and down the mountain. Phil disappeared for a few seconds before resurfacing with his ABS backpack fully inflated. Watching Phil get carried down the mountain was one of the scariest moments of my life, and from that day on I haven't skied a day in the backcountry without my ABS. It's a fact of life that accidents happen, and I owe it to myself to be prepared.
